Day 67

Read: Romans 15:23-29

Reflect:

Having spoken of his mission (what we could call ‘spiritual help’, v.15-22), Paul now turns to talk about giving ‘social help’ to other Christians. It is a duty (something ‘indebted’ or ‘owed’, v.27)— but it should also be joyful (what we are ‘pleased’ to do, v.27). How can we do this joyfully? By remembering that we have received spiritual blessings through the gospel, and so we please God by sharing practical and material blessings with others.

Review:

What was Paul taking to Jerusalem (v.26)?

Response:

"Dear God, thank you for your blessings: Your gift of community; the health and grace that allows me to serve others; and the privilege of daily provisions I can share with those in need. Let me not forget your benefits, but always seek to be a blessing to uplift all around me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

Day 68

Read: Romans 15:30-33

Reflect:

In contrast to the world, for Christians, a sign of maturity is dependence, the recognition that we are utterly reliant on God and his grace. A key characteristic of dependence for Christians is prayer. In asking his readers to pray for him (to “strive together” with him in prayer, a Greek term commonly used in athletic contexts to describe a concerted team effort), Paul modeled dependence on God and mutual submission.

Review:

How can the Roman church support Paul? (v.30)

Response:

"Dear God, thank you that you are a God who always answers prayer and are an ever-present help in time of need. Help me to learn to depend on you in all things, and to trust in your guidance in every situation. And use me, if it is your will that I might be the answer to another’s prayer, restoring their hope and refreshing their faith. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

Day 69

Read: Romans 16:1-16

Reflect:

Even this list of names (which we might be tempted to gloss over) reminds us God’s plan includes the entire world! Here are Jews and Gentiles, male and female, slaves and those of high social status… and the first convert from Asia (v.5)! These were now “brothers and sisters” in the Lord, and then became “servant”, “coworkers”, “fellow prisoners” devoted to ministry alongside Paul. May we also follow in their example of unity and dedication to God and each other.
